Context:
The Los Angeles River is the central natural feature of Los Angeles and the site of the city’s beginnings. Today it is largely concreted and degraded.
Goals:
The LARRMP goals are to: revitalize the river (flood protection, water quality, safe access, ecosystem restoration), green the neighborhoods (continuous greenway, river identity, extend river features into neighborhoods), capture community opportunities (activity focus, civic pride, public facilities, cultural heritage) and create value (quality of life, urban design, attention on underserved areas).
Proposal Summary:
The LARRMP includes a continuous park along the 32 miles of the river within LA. The park will include natural areas, recreational areas, bike paths, walking paths, and restored habitat. The park connects with neighborhoods through green streets and river-oriented development. The plan includes 240 specified projects – from small-scale pocket parks to large-scale opportunity areas. The plan specifies that transportation in river area would favor walking and bicycling.
The LARRMP goes into detail for dramatic changes in five opportunity areas: Canoga Park, River Glen, Taylor Yard, Chinatown-Cornfields, and Downtown Industrial Area. The Chinatown-Cornfields opportunity area includes two alternatives. The preferred alternative shows the
