Creator: Antonio Bermudez, Michael Coyne, Liz Fowler, Mary Novak, Cheryl Stump
Study Type: Student Project
Status of Project: Completed 2003. Not adopted.
Context:
“Avenue 26: Re-connecting a Community” is one of four studies that make up “Draft Strategic Plans: A Set of Ideas for Lincoln Heights,” a student project completed as part of a UCLA Site Planning Studio in 2003 taught by Assistant Urban Planning Professor Vinit Mukhija. This project was launched to formulate new ideas for Lincoln Heights—a place that has lost some of its former glory, but has immense potential to return to it given its various assets such as community institutions, a walking and transit-using culture, the Gold Line, the Los Angeles River, and historic buildings.
Goals:
To formulate plans for making the proposed Avenue 26 Gold Line station an effective transit-oriented development and create a destination point for the 5-points commercial area.
Proposal Summary:
Build areas adjacent to the Avenue 26 Gold Line station to include mixed-use buildings at 3-4 stories; parks; shared parking; and pedestrian and bike-friendly streets. This should be done in three phases: 1) Develop transit oriented development and other land use Interventions 2) Create parks and redevelopment of other industrial sites 3) Redevelop industrial sites east of Avenue 26 and enhance pedestrian linkage over the 110 from Figueroa.
